i have measured out my life with coffee spoons

This is possibly the most random post I've ever done, but I have a thing for coffee foam art. I like looking for faces or patterns in the foam. These were some super cool ones I found on my flickr travels. How cool would it be to be able to do one of these in your morning latte?! I think you can do barista courses somewhere where they teach you how to do these very cool foam pictures. I remember a place in Richmond, Melbourne, where the coffees were works of art, and you were loathe to drink them and melt the little Mona Lisa in your mug.

A seahorse!

A butterfly!

A witch?

A flower!

Richard!

Heart!

This is starting to sound like the roll call for Captain Planet or some such.

Teddy bear!

Black cat!

Squiggles!

Bunny!

Who feels like a coffee now? Ha ha.

Anyway. Reasons Green Ink has been quiet lately:
  • London has been experiencing some beautiful weather lately, especially on the weekends - and hence staying inside in front of a computer hasn't held much appeal!
  • I've been working on an article for a friend's magazine
  • I've been reading a lot
  • It was my birthday on Tuesday and the celebrations spilled over into several days! It was the best birthday ever (more on that later)
  • Work has zapped quite a bit of my energy
  • I've written posts but then was worried they were just stupid/boring so didn't post them
  • I've had a few existential crisises - in my head only, of course, but it has affected my motivation slightly. Funny that I've just posted heaps of coffee pictures and I'm reminded of a line in the early seasons of Friends where Rachel says, "everyone I know is either getting married, or getting pregnant, or getting promoted....and I'm getting coffee! And it's not even for me!!" I need to make a list somewhere of my Top 10 Motivators and drag it out whenever I'm having a "I can't do this" day! Reading this and this has helped (I will write my thoughts on this more later)
  • About to have a weekend filled with sun, sight-seeing and (hopefully) good wine and Portuguese custard tarts. Maybe I'll do some writing on the beach.
  • I am very happy, and that tends to be when the days melt into each other.
Now I'm off to grab a latte!

  1. Yum, coffee.

The swirly one reminds me of Van Gough's "Starry Night" :)

  2. Thank you for reminding me to APPRECIATE.

The other day I was getting coffee, waiting in a long queue in a very busy coffee shop, getting impatient while the barista took forever creating coffee foam art. At the time, it annoyed me that she took all that time because most were take away orders and the art got covered with (and probably ruined by) a plastic lid.

I love the black cat and the last set of suqiggles. :)

  5. Great photos!

I was a barista briefly in a former life. I was quite excited about being able to do hearts - I had no idea they got so fancy! Richard is amazing!

Happy Belated, glad it was a good one!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who hears lines from 'Friends' at important moments...

  9. There isn't anything quite like being happy...is there? I daresay it beats chocolate even.

Speaking of coffee and Australia, my sister married an Australian and is living outside of Sydney. Have you ever had a Dane's coffee? I DREAM about it. A lot.

  11. Phil, I take issue with your fourth to last quote.

Never censor your blog posts because you think they will be boring or... what was it? Stupid? Puh-lease.

It depends of course, on what your believe the purpose of your blog is... but if I'm not mistaken, one of its very purposes (porpoises?) is to achieve the whittling of a path through the existential crisis of which you speak (and that we all suffer). To censor for fear of inducing boredom or stupidity with your words, that you might alienate your readers, that you might not be the Phil that you want to come across as, is not healthy thing.

Some of our best posts ever are the ones we thought were stupid or boring. Funnily enough, because they are often the most honest.

Hate me, love me for saying that. I care more about the trivial meanderings of your mind than I do about foam on coffee (but then again, I'd rather drink my coffee than look at it - call me old fashioned, and I also understand that foam pictures are mindful meanderings). Outpourings, blah-days, and blog posts that risk your believing that you're turning into everything you don't want to be are healthy and useful.

    With much love.

  12. Ah! I've been wanting to go to that place in Richmond forever, Flavours of Lakhoum I think it is! I went to dumplings so many times this weekend, thinking each time, this might be the last chance I get to go before I leave and I thought of you each time.

    HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR TUESDAY!

  13. I wonder if it would be possible to write a haiku in coffee foam?

  14. (following on from Crafty Green Poet)

... or an entire blog post in foam. One word per cup please. :)

Enjoy the summer, enjoy all the great things going on in your life, and don't sweat on the small stuff..

Wish they did hot chocolate foam, but i am just afraid all the pictures will be Biggest Loser contestants LOL

  15. Happy birthday! And don't worry so much about life. It all happens just as it is supposed to.

I always get a bit of quiet happiness when I read your blogs. Don't censor too much.

  16. Anyone who can quote Friends is cool.

    Or Seinfeld.

Okay, not a brilliant comment, but it's the best I have right this moment.

Also, Lori Tiron-Pandit is right...just share. Don't censor. Feed us!

  21. Hello,

My name is Bill Hawthorne, and I represent maacenter.org, a leading web resource for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cancer information. Our organization is dedicated to increasing awareness of the terrible health consequences of asbestos exposure through the distribution of the best informational materials and public outreach efforts.

I found your site through a search and decided to contact you because of its high environmental and green presence which is extremely important in our movement. Your viewers are extremely savvy and motivated. The promotion of how buildings should now be built using green products to avoid asbestos and mesothelioma as well as the awareness of past buildings and preventative steps in avoiding asbestos exposure are extremely important. My goal is to get a resource link on your site/blog or even to provide a guest posting to be placed.
