I had something else planned for this post but have been so energised and dosed up on happy vibes because of this glorious hot sunny weather London has been blessed with over the last 36 hours that this had to be today's things i love.
I love, love, love sunny afternoons. It doesn't necessarily have to be hot too - some of my favourite weather back home in Tassie occurs towards the end of August, where it is still winter and the air is still icy and crisp, but the sun comes out in the mid afternoon and showers the bare trees, mountains, pavements, houses and winter-ravaged faces with golden magic. Those were afternoons where I just loved living in Tassie - well, loved living, full stop.
But heat definitely is a plus!
I've missed the sunshine and heat over the last six months or so. Winter was so bitterly cold - I bunkered down with layers upon layers of clothes; my hands constantly cupped around a mug of something, anything, warm; the memories of lying on a beach in Portugal or drinking Pimm's on my patio last July seemed very, very far away.
Over the last few days, London seems to have shed the last of its winter blankets and revealed a brilliant blue cloudless sky, sun that made everything in its path golden and sparkling, and a blissful heat that seeped into the air that carries smells like barbecues, fresh grass, honeysuckle, beer, strawberries and sunscreen.
Yesterday we spent the sunny afternoon in Hampstead, having pints in the sun, and then walking to Camden Markets which, although very crowded, were great fun and like being at a festival filled with charcoal barbecues, cocktail shakers and music playing in the streets. Today we stayed closer to home and spent the afternoon in St James's Park with books (me) and sketch pad (Tom) on a patch of cool, sweet smelling grass. I eventually abandoned my book and gazed up at the sky veined with leafy green branches, singing this song to myself:
I've also had this song on replay most of the day - perfect for lazy sunny afternoons:
I think Henry James got it spot on.
"Summer afternoon....summer afternoon...the two most beautiful words in the English language."
What is your favourite weather? Are you a sucker for sunny afternoons like me?
