fifty shades....
After a few reader requests for me to write about this book, I caved earlier in the week and bought it, seeing the library was well and truly backlogged until Christmas with reservations for it. I'm not normally one to follow trends - I'm one of those people who discovers and becomes obsessed with something or someone years, maybe even decades, after they were first popular. I didn't read Harry Potter until 2003, by which time there were 5 books out! But I digress.
I've not had a chance to dive right in yet, but I shall and will report back soon!
Have you read it? Any preliminary thoughts (or warnings, I understand opinions are very strong and divided on this one!) for me?

I managed to get up to the beginning of the third book, and couldn't go much further. It's not an amazing story or anything, and I found it got a bit boring & repetitive. BUT, similar to you - the hype forced me to read it!
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
Indeed Leah, the hype has me most intrigued. Time will tell! :)
DeleteIt's too tame for you Phil! ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't even got to anything saucy yet!! ;)
DeleteRead all three awhile back. Inquiring minds needed to know what all the fuss was about. The story is a huge stretch, if you ask me, and its not Shakespeare, but was good for a laugh. I kept thinking "oh come on!!!" Some of the repetition is annoying (biting my lip, inner goddess, etc). It was a quick read and certainly a fantasy. A form of escapism from the dull routine with some voyeurism, perhaps that is why it was so popular. Let me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteA few people have said similar things - it has only intrigued me all the more! I'm looking forward to reporting back :)
DeleteDon't forget about murmuring :) (probably written 5 times per page). I'm just through 1/2 of the first book, not interesting enough to keep me reading quickly!
DeleteAh yes, I get the whole murmuring, inner goddess, holy Moses stuff now! Very repetitive!
DeleteI'll be waiting for the verdict! Can you send it my way afterwards?! ;o) It sounds nothing but hilarous at the least and I'm soon on hols!
ReplyDeleteAhhh it'll be good to hear your thoughts!! The blurb on the back it describes the book as 'liberating'; personally I've never read anything so repressive in my life!! I think I'll stick to D H Lawrence ;-)
ReplyDeleteFavourite quote so far: "he pulled off his boxer briefs and his erection sprung free"...hahaha!! (or is that me being incredibly childish? Boxer briefs?!)
DH Lawrence is far, FAR sexier!
DeleteThe writing is a trainwreck, the story is contrived, but it is a bit of escapism that is for sure ;)
ReplyDeleteRead them all about six months ago. There is a thin story running through it but it does become a bit repetitious and slightly tedious. Still, I did read them all. LOL.
ReplyDeleteDespite all the criticism, I have NOTHING bad to say about this book! I love love love it, each time I picked it up it brought a very welcome period of escape. And for me, that's what reading is all about.
ReplyDeletePhil you will love it, what girl wouldn't ;)
Ohh I have heard so much about it too, everyone was reading it on holiday and it's extremely popular in Spain too.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit put off by the fact that everyone is reading and talking about it but really look forward to knowing what you make out of it. :)
