best ever running playlist

I made you a mix tape :)

A little while ago I asked SLSB fans on Facebook about their favourite power tracks to run/work out to.  Lots of people responded and I put together a playlist of 13 tracks that are fabulous to run to!  The tracks I picked are:

Rock Star (Jason Nevins Remix Edit) - N.E.R.D.
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk
I Like How It Feels - Enrique Inglesias
Straight Lines - Silverchair
Where's Your Head At - Basement Jaxx
Knights of Cydonia - Muse
All Of The Lights - Kanye
Lose Yourself - Eminem
Catch - Kosheen
Super Massive Black Hole - Muse
Shoot The Runner - Kassabian
Joker And The Thief - Wolfmother
Alejandro - Lady Gaga

This is the order I had them in - I know 8tracks mixes it up once you've played it once the whole way through - so the idea is that you started with my favourite, guaranteed to make you feel like a rock star song (!) and Lady Gaga is designed to be the cool down.

I enjoy having the mix on around the house too, it's a surprisingly (well, maybe not so surprisingly!) motivating mix to have on while working.  Most of the songs I had heard before but I had never thought of running too, and they're fabulous!  Silverchair's "Straight Lines" is particularly good on those long bumpy trails.  I love having new music to listen to on a run, it's one of the best rut-breakers I know!

I am working on Part 2 as we speak, which I'll hopefully have ready for next Saturday's race!

What are your favourite running/work out songs that get you pumped?

  1. Hey Phil, going off the title of your playlist I thought you might have "30/30 - 150" by Stone Sour on it as that song contains that exact lyric & is a cracking tune to run to, especially towards the end when you can feel yourself starting to flag.

I find my running music depends on my mood & (if I'm training) what the training plan is dictating. So recovery runs are filled with things like 80's Madonna & Lady Gaga, speed work has metal such as Slipknot & Iron Maiden & for long runs I just have set to shuffle as the surprises keep my motivation up.

    1. Hi Em! I'd never heard that song before, it sounds like a cracker, I'll have to find it and give it a listen. The title for the playlist came from a thought I had while I was running to one of my power songs when I just felt invincible :)

Madonna and Lady Gaga are two of my favourites too - most of the tracks on Madonna's "Confessions" are very good to run to! x

  2. Hey hey! My blog is named after the line in 'Rock Star' - it is my all-time favourite running song! Although I never put it at the beginning of playlists because it's weird for me to hear 'it's almost over now' right at the beginning of a run, much less a race, when the event is anything but almost over! I usually put it at the end just to give me an extra kick in the bum ;)

Devour by Shinedown is brilliant for amping up the pace in the closing miles for me, and I'm also fond of Burn it to the Ground by Nickelback. My favourite at the moment has to be Another Way to Die by Disturbed, and I think the only song that has featured on every playlist I've ever made is Feuer Frei by Rammstein (been obsessed with them since I was 12!) Mostly I listen to rock/metal but sometimes some Godawful cheese makes its way onto my playlists too ;)

    1. Ha, I thought of you Jess! ;) Funny, I like having "Rock Star" early on in the run after warm up because it's normally the first 5k that are hardest for me. Because that playlist was meant to just be full of power songs I thought what better way to start it than with one that always gets me pumped :)

I love all your suggestions...stay tuned for playlist 2! x

  3. Fun! :) I like a lot of the body pump songs, but I never know who they are by! My fave used to be an Ash soundtrack (intergalactic sonic 7's or something- their hits)-as it was the right speed for my running, but recently I have podcasts of talking for training, and nothing for races- soak up the atmosphere instead.

    1. I haven't yet tried running to podcasts - I do rely on the beat of the music to help me get into a rhythm. I'd like to try it!

I have tended not have anything at races lately, certainly not the last 3 I've done. I'm undecided about Saturday.

  5. Hey Philippa :)
cool post, I hadn't heard some of these songs before, I like Rock star!
My running playlist's songs all start quite upbeat, otherwise I feel like I struggle if there's a really long pause from one song to the next!
I love the Vines, do you know them? Many songs of theirs are great for running, such as "Nothin's Comin'", I also adore Blink 182's "Stay Together for the kids",I just feel it's so powerful I feel like I fly when it comes on. Also check out "Gin & Milk" by Dirty Pretty Things <3 <3 <3

    1. I like my playlists to be upbeat too. I often skip many songs on my shuffle because I'm not in the mood for the slower burners ;) Thanks for your suggestions, I'll check them out! I've discovered so many favourites this way! x
