happy holidays to all!

And so it's that time of year again, friends!  I hope however you are celebrating the holiday season that you and those you love will be safe, warm (or cool!), happy, healthy and blessed with good things.  It's been a rather frantic time at Latte Towers of late, so I'll be back again in the New Year to fill you in on what's been going down and share some plans for what I hope will be a hip and happening 2013.

But right now it's time to finish off my home-made chocolate truffles, wrap some presents and mellow out to some favourite Christmas tunes on the stereo.  Take care of yourselves and thank you for all the friendship and support this year....catch you on the flip side :) xx

To yourself, respect."

an aussie christmas nut roast

If you're in need of a veggie option for Christmas dinner this year, look no further than this delicious nut roast!  The vegetarians in your life will absolutely love you for it.

I call it an Aussie nut roast because of the inclusion of Vegemite :)  You could also include some macadamia nuts and bush spice in the mixture to Aussie-fy it even more!

Aussie Christmas Nut Roast
Inspired by Rebecca at Number 98
Serves 4-6

200g mixed nuts (use whatever you've got or your favourites- walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, brazil nuts, peanuts and any seeds go well) – I used brazils and walnuts
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
Tiny bit (1 tsp or so) olive oil
Half a large onion
400g tin chopped tomatoes, drained in a colander for 10 minutes
1 large egg
100g strong cheddar, grated finely
dash of dried herbs - I used oregano and tarragon
dash of allspice (for that Christmassy flavour!)
handful of fresh parsley, chopped
1 tsp Vegemite (or Marmite)
Juice of 3 small clementines or 1 large orange
1 tsp grainy mustard
1 tsp mint jelly (optional)
Pinch of salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper

Grease a large loaf tin and set aside.

Lightly toast the nuts, coriander seeds, mustard seeds, smoked paprika and olive oil, tossing everything to coat well, in a frying pan until just becoming fragrant. Remove and cool slightly, then whizz in a food processor until finely ground.

In a large bowl (or in the same food processor bowl to save on washing up, as I do!) mix all the ingredients together thoroughly. Place in the prepared pan and leave overnight in the fridge to let the flavours deepen and the loaf firm up.  If you're in a hurry you can prepare it the same day but allow at least an hour's resting time.

NB: to veganise this dish, you could use egg replacement (such as Orgran) or a flax egg for the egg and replace the cheese with a vegan equivalent like Cheezly or even just add some different nuts or some seeds to make up the volume.

Preheat oven to 180C. Cook for 45 minutes to an hour until firm and golden. Allow to cool slightly before "carving" :)

Serve with vegetable gravy, cranberry sauce and all your favourite Christmas vegetables.  In the UK, Christmas isn't Christmas without sprouts, I've learned.  The supermarkets are just packed with them this time of year - I love seeing the little branches of fresh sprouts that look like pseudo-Christmas trees in themselves. And weirdly, I used to hate sprouts before I moved here...now I love them!

This nut roast is so delicious....I was rather chuffed with myself! It is so moist and savoury - I'm sure even the carnivores wouldn't turn up their noses at it.

The nut roast mixture also works well as a filling for a vegetarian version of Beef Wellington too. Saute some large portobello mushrooms then stuff with the  nut roast mixture and wrap in some pastry. This also makes a wonderful vegetarian Christmas meal.

Merry Christmas!

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - the last one!

Well, it's been an awesome 12 days over here at SLSB!  Thank you very much for all the interest and support, it's so lovely "meeting" readers who haven't commented before :) I wish I could give a prize to everyone.  Remember all the give-aways remain open until midnight tonight (UK time) so get in quick!

I thought we'd end the give-away with a bang so today's very generous prize is not one, not two but TWELVE prizes!

Twelve lucky UK readers will get......

A BRITA Fill N Go!

This handy little thing has barely left my side since I got one over the summer.  It's the best drink bottle for commuting/travelling that I've had for a long while.

It's quite big (it holds 600ml) and fits very easily into my backpack side pocket or carry bag.  It has a filter in it that you replace as you need to and there's also a straw in it that means you don't have to tilt your head back to drink, you just suck it up through the straw.  So easy!  So far it's kept the water in it lovely and cold too. And it doesn't leak either!

It's great to have a reusable bottle that not only looks good but is doing me and the environment good too :)

I get comments on my Fill N Go every time I use it and the point of this 12 Days of Christmas give-away was to share things with you guys that I enjoy, believe in and have been lucky enough to try.....so here we are!

Thank you BRITA for being so generous!  12 Fill N Gos are up for grabs.....what are you waiting for?!

For your chance to win a Fill N Go, please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

For extra entries you can also do one or both of the following:
Please leave a separate comment for each extra entry, I would hate to miss anyone :)

Entries close midnight, 12th December 2012 (UK time).  Winners will be drawn at random and notified on 13th December 2012.

Please note this give-away is for UK only.

This, and all the other give-aways, will close at midnight tonight (UK time), Wednesday December 12.  Good luck!

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 11!

Day 11 of the SLSB 12 Days of Christmas give-away is 5 x 3 month premium GOLD memberships with runtastic.

That's right, 5 lucky readers will win today's prize!

Runtastic is the app I use on my Blackberry to track my distances, times and splits when I train.  Of all the apps I've used it's by far the best and the most accurate.  And you don't have to be a runner to use it, runtastic accommodates sports and activities of all kinds, including swimming and cycling.

I really enjoy using runtastic, it's an awesome app and wonderful to see your stats to keep yourself motivated.  It is immensely satisfying to have some stats to measure your progress with, especially when you're training for a big event.  You can see your average speed for the whole session and then a breakdown per kilometre, which is always really useful and interesting, particularly if you're trying to improve.

There's also a lovely social aspect to using runtastic too -  there are forums where you can chat with other runtastic users and analyse your stats.  In fact, in October I was even honoured to be named runtastic's user of the month :)

With runtastic GOLD membership, the interactivity and motivation is taken to another level - you can get cheered on as you  train or compete, you get performance reports on your sessions and you can keep in touch with friends who also use the app and motivate each other.  Running is very much a solo sport for me but it is so nice to be cheered on, which is why I love races!  :)

Runtastic has two versions of their app - the Lite (which is free) and the Pro, and a GOLD membership can be applied to your account regardless of which version of the app you have. Runtastic works on Blackberry, iPhone, Windows Phone...any device with a GPS really!

So if you'd like to take your sport to the next level with a GOLD runtastic membership here's all you have to do....

Please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 10!

Ooh, we're on the final countdown now!  Remember you have until midnight this Wednesday December 12 to get your entries for ALL the giveaways in....there's some fab things up for grabs so don't miss out!

Today's prize I'm very excited about and wouldn't mind winning myself.....

The lovely folk at Rachel's Organic are giving two lucky UK SLSB readers a delicious Christmassy flavoured treat.....a cooler bag with 6 tubs of either their limited edition seasonal Apple & Cinnamon yoghurt OR 6 tubs of their new Greek Style Ginger yoghurt.

I can attest that both flavours are utterly fabulous and very, very addictive!  The Apple & Cinnamon is perfect for breakfast, especially with porridge, and also works well as an alternative to cream or ice-cream with apple crumble, pie or strudel.  The Ginger one is just so thick and luscious, the perfect accompaniment to fruit, any citrus flavoured cake, a slice of rhubarb pie....but frankly I'd have it for dessert on its own any day!  The chunks of ginger in it are quite magical.  If you're a ginger lover you'll absolutely adore it.

Rachel's Organic were Britain's first ever certified organic dairy producer and they continue to grow their range today with the same commitment to using only the best natural and organic ingredients.  They have Greek Style flavours which are thick and luscious and indulgent; low fat flavours which are still thick and creamy; and no-fat and natural flavours too.  Their low-fat rhubarb was the first yoghurt that found its way into my shopping basket when I first arrived in the UK.  Even today it still reminds me of those first few sour-sweet weeks as I found my feet here...the flavour was most fitting!

Coconut was always my absolute favourite Rachel's flavour but with the arrival of Apple & Cinnamon and Ginger on the scene....I really don't think I can pick a favourite now.  They're all just too good!

For your chance to win this amazing prize, please leave a comment on this post with your name, whether you would like Apple & Cinnamon or Ginger, and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

For extra entries you can do one, several or all of the following:

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 9!

Today is a rather special give-away - I have prizes for UK readers and for readers in Germany!

The interview before last on my podcast Book Ends was with Stella Newman, author of Pear Shaped.  Pear Shaped was one of my favourite discoveries of this year, thanks to my friend Lisa, and I was utterly thrilled to meet Stella and talk to her about what inspired her novel which strikes an interesting balance between decadent romance and darker, less fluffy subjects like depression and low self esteem that sometimes arise from unhealthy relationships.

Pear Shaped is a tale that will make you laugh, probably make you hungry as it is filled with so many delicious descriptions of food (!), but it might also make you wince with recognition too if you’ve ever had your heart broken by someone who, in hindsight, really wasn’t worth it.

At first Sophie, the protagonist, thinks heartbreak can be fixed with an M&S Belgian chocolate pudding  but eventually she realises that the endless pursuit of physical perfection can be very damaging and that being happy in our own skin, rather than feeling obliged to live up to the expectations and desires of others, is definitely the way to go.

Described as achingly funny, searingly honest, sharp and sweet….Pear Shaped is very much like the author herself.  And not only is the novel compulsive reading – I read it in one afternoon – but it’s also a bit of a foodie’s guide to London (and New York too) in disguise. I blame this book entirely for introducing me to Compost Cookies.

So today we have 3 x signed copies of Pear Shaped to give away for UK readers

and

3 x copies of the German translation, Süße Teilchen, to give away for readers in Germany!

For your chance to win this prize, please leave a comment on this post with your name, whether you would like the English or German version, and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.  Bitte schreiben Sie auf Deutsch, wenn Sie mögen, kann ich es verstehen!

For extra entries you can do one, several or all of the following:
Please leave a separate comment for each extra entry, I would hate to miss anyone :)

Entries close midnight, 12th December 2012 (UK time).  Winner will be drawn at random and notified on 13th December 2012.

Please note this give-away is for UK and Germany only.

Good luck and stay tuned for the next SLSB 12 Days of Christmas give-away xx

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 8!

It's all about books this weekend - days 8 and 9 of the 12 days of Christmas giveaway are all of a literary nature :)

So let's start with today's fab prize that's up for grabs......

Laura Fountain, of lazygirlrunning.com fame and now published author, is kindly gifting an e-copy of her forthcoming book The Lazy Runner which is (how's this for cool) being released on Christmas Eve!

Laura's story of how she went from couch potato to marathon runner is nothing short of inspiring.  In 2008 she realised she needed to take control of her health and fitness and started learning how to run.  Although she couldn't run for five minutes to start with she decided to think big and aim to complete a marathon......two years later she did it, and she's just signed up for her sixth 26.2 miler!

Of the book itself, Laura says she never expected to write a book about running - she was always planning, like so many of us, to write a novel - but the great response from her blog readers combined with a desire to write a practical, helpful guide to anyone contemplating a similar journey to hers resulted in The Lazy Runner

I love books about running - I find them so inspiring, they're definitely a secret weapon to lift any flagging motivation.  I'm looking forward to adding Laura's book to my collection :)

So if you'd like to get your hands on an e-copy of The Lazy Runner and get motivated to set yourself a big goal in 2013, here's all you have to do....

Please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

For extra entries you can do one, several or all of the following:

Please leave a separate comment for each extra entry, I would hate to miss anyone :)

Entries close midnight, 12th December 2012 (UK time).  Winner will be drawn at random and notified on 13th December 2012.  You'll then get your e-book on Christmas Eve!

And this give-away is WORLDWIDE - everyone is welcome to enter!

Good luck and stay tuned for the next SLSB 12 Days of Christmas give-away xx

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 7!

It's Day 7 of the SLSB 12 Days of Christmas give-away....we're over halfway there :)

Today's give-away is courtesy of Drink Me Chai, the best chai latte powder you can buy (in my opinion).  It's one of my very favourite things, especially this time of the year when it's so cold and you need to be warmed up from the inside out!

As well as an original Spiced flavour, the Drink Me chai range includes chocolate, mango, vanilla, peppermint and now a green tea flavour too.  I've recently started drinking my Drink Me Chai with steamed almond milk and it has taken the deliciousness to a whole new level!

Drink Me Chai are offering 1 lucky UK based SLSB reader a Christmas pack with a tub of every flavour (6 tubs in total), so you can try all of them and pick a favourite (it will be hard, trust me).  The lucky winner will also get a Drink Me Chai mug and t-shirt!

For your chance to win this prize, please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 6!

Today's SLSB 12 Days of Christmas give-away is from my good friends at Up and Running!

Faithful SLSB readers will be no stranger to me singing the praises of the Up and Running online running courses for women, run by Shauna Reid and Julia Jones since 2011. They have coached hundreds of women all over the world to learn how to run, or to take their running to the next level, and have great fun doing it.  The 5k and 10k courses are held twice a year in the Northern Hemisphere spring and autumn, and the half marathon course is self paced and can be taken up any time.

In addition to the actual coaching programme, you get loads of materials in the form of training guides, inspirational videos and stories via a members only blog written by Shauna and Julia, and lots of interactive support through the member forums.  It's just awesome. Julia also helped me train for the London Marathon last year and I can attest that 1) she really knows what she's talking about and 2) she gets results :)

If you want to get 2013 off to a cracking start, this is a great way to do it!

For your chance to win the Up and Running course of your choice - 5k, 10k or half marathon (worth up to £99), please leave a comment on this post with your name, the course you'd like to win and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you're the lucky winner.

For extra entries you can do one, several or all of the following:

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 5!

Today's 12 Days of Christmas give-away is from my pals at GOOD Hemp Nutrition...2 x tubs of their new Fit Shake are up for grabs!

Fit Shake is my new favourite from the GOOD Hemp range - it's a strawberry flavoured 100% plant based protein designed especially for women, with extracts of green tea.  It's a great breakfast on the go, blended with frozen fruit, spinach and almond milk, and also if I've got in from a long run and need a quick protein fix.

I actually got introduced to GOOD Hemp by winning a tub of their chocolate Gym shake many moons ago, which is still a favourite ingredient in my Chocolate Cherry Bomb smoothie.  Since then I've tried many, many protein powders but have come back to their range not just for the great taste but because hemp is a great plant based source of protein - in fact it's the best animal-free protein for building muscle.  The omega 3 content is excellent, as well as being full of fibre and vitamin E (great for your hair, skin and nails) and I like knowing it's an ethical and environmentally conscious choice.

So many protein powders out there aren't suitable for veggies or vegans and I love that GOOD Hemp's products are suitable for everyone!  In fact I recently became a GOOD Hemp Ambassador, which was a great honour.  Protein powders aren't just for body builders but for anyone who is active and wanting to make sure they're firing on all cylinders.

For your chance to win one of two GOOD Hemp Fit Shakes (worth £15.29 each), please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

For extra entries you can do one, several or all of the following:

Please leave a separate comment for each extra entry, I would hate to miss anyone :)

SLSB 12 days of christmas give-away - day 4!

Today's give-away is two special festive gift boxes from Trumi - one for you and one for a friend!

As you know, I discovered these delicious chia seed based protein bars earlier in the year and am a devoted fan!  I've been living off them for the last week or so as I've been commuting in to London - they make an excellent snack or light breakfast on the run as well as a post-workout refuel.

If you're looking for a gift for your personal trainer, yoga teacher, running coach, gym buddy or active healthy living friend, Trumi's special festive gift boxes are just the ticket.  They're packed with a mixture of 8 of their Raspberry Cacao and Hazelnut Berry protein bars (or you can just have your favourite flavour if you want - but I love them both!) and presented in a gorgeous box designed for postage.

For your chance to win 2 x Trumi Festive Boxes (worth £14.50 each), one for you and one for a friend, please leave a comment on this post with your name and a way of contacting you if you don't have a blog/Google account so you can be notified if you win.

Day 2 of the SLSB 12 Days of Christmas Give-away is 6 tubs of delicious Munchy Seeds!

I discovered these at the Yoga Show a few months ago and am now hooked!!  The Omega sprinkle is my absolute favourite, packed full of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, linseed, rape seeds and hulled hemp. It's such a winner for sprinkling on to salads, stir-fries, on top of pies or potato bakes, or just grabbing a handful from the tub to snack on.  I'm also a huge fan of the Honey seeds, they are very moreish indeed!

Munchy Seeds are packed full of essential vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre and are free from gluten, cholesterol and artificial colours and flavourings.  They are also suitable for vegetarians and coeliacs.

One lucky UK winner will win 6 x 200g tubs of delicious Munchy Seeds flavours.

To enter just tell us in a comment which of the below flavours  is not currently a Munchy Seeds flavour?

Good luck and happy holidays!! xxx

*****

The first give-away is hosted by one of Australia's most iconic activewear brands and one of my very favourite ranges of running and yoga gear on earth....Lorna Jane!  Faithful SLSB readers will be no stranger to me sporting their inspirational singlets and t-shirts.  You couldn't keep me out of the Melbourne Central shop when I lived there.  Their activewear is seriously lovely stuff - it's amazing what a difference wearing some really beautiful workout gear can do for your motivation and morale, rather than just chucking on old baggy t-shirts and tracky daks :)

What I really love about Lorna Jane is their philosophy about living an active life for all the joy and amazing benefits it brings.  It's all about nourishment, for your body, mind and soul. I think they spread a really great positive message to young women about empowerment, strength and being fit and healthy for its own sake.  Love. It.

And now....Lorna Jane are launching in the UK in January 2013!  That news made my year :) To celebrate, they are very kindly giving one lucky UK SLSB reader the chance to win this....
